The news arrived recently through my television set, and in the beginning I felt national pride...
Three famous Greeks, the pride of our country and mainly, of their own high-class families that still run the country, passed the gates of the Madame Tussaud Museum in London, post mortem, and acquired wax eternity and glory in this historical establishment.
Thus, the glory of our country will decorate this museum as well, the museum of every celebrity in the world, of the Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera type etc. The presentation of the wax statues took place in a ceremony which was attended by important Greek VIPs with accordingly suited pomp and circumstance. Many speeches were utterred, many congratulations were given, everybody admired each other and congratulated each other, and the three statues stayed in the museum, to be passed by by its visitors, who are rushing to see a footballer or a pop-idol instead of some Balkan leader.
To be honest, I don't know how charmed I was by the idea and the whole ceremony, and in essence,
there is no point for a living memory to be trapped in the form of a wax statue--while, au contraire, some wax, sculpted and carefully painted can give a hint of memory when that memory has inevitably faded away.
Greeks of the global stage of the museum had started to fade away--nobody remembered anything for them except for something more than what was possibly worth remembering and of course, something less regarding the reason why in their time they were considered of international acknowledgement. Time passes, history flows and the leaders are lost in its fod, while even their work is transposed inton the political and historical acquis, while faces and facts are surrendering to the embrace of memory. This does not happen at Madame Tussaud's: there anyone is entitled to a wax statue and a glimpse by the bypasser--as a bribe towards immortality.
And thus, there you have Greek politicians in the podium of wax memory lane... And everything is good so far...
The British, have secured many more tickets for their museum from Greek tourists... The standing politician confirmed the inexistence of politics or political interest in our country by surrendering some historical figures to immortality... The relatives of these political figures expressed their emotions and stated that they are ready for new democratic conquests that will dazzle the Brits.
The Greek people, wandering around in the museums of London with the thirst of the newly-born posh intellectual, will end up there, and finally will have something to see as a condolence for the status of Greece in the world civilization, art and facade. One illusion of a "historical special weight" is exactly what is needed for the countryman that visits a metropolis.
So, what is the point of all this? In the end, expect to see the Brits returning the Elgin marbles, cast in flawless, soft, ductile and well-finished Madame Tussaud Wax.
